Kathua Rape and Murder Case: Six of Seven Accused Convicted

A special court ruled today on the brutal gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua last year. Six of the seven accused were convicted and one was acquitted. The three main accused were sentenced to life imprisonment, while the rest were sentenced to five years in prison. The convicts include Sanji Ram, his nephew and one of his friends, and three police personnel. The police personnel were accused of taking money to destroy evidence.…

‘Unauthorized’ persons checking citizenship in Assam, ‘lynching’ minority women, men

… indigenous Assamese Muslims are being “attacked” at the sites where National Register for Citizens (NRC) hearings are taking place. In a detailed note, CJP says, men are being attacked with hammers, while women are being grabbed and squeezed. What is particularly shocking, says CJP, is that “unauthorized” persons are checking whether documents being brought in by those coming to represent at NRC hearing centres are in order. CJP, which is headed by Mumbai-based human rights leader Teesta Setalvad, claims, it is “gearing up to meet the situation with the help of its team of lawyers and volunteers”, as it did during the 2002 Gujarat riots.…

HUGE! Assam Police officer ‘forged’ witness statements and signatures to declare Kargil war hero Sanaullah ‘foreigner’

In a spectacular twist, all three witnesses have filed a case against Sub-Inspector Chandramal Das of the Assam Police border branch for fabricating their statements to declare a decorated army soldier Mohammad Sanaullah a foreigner before sending him to a detention centre. The case of Sanaullah, an honourary Captain of the Indian Army, had sent shock-waves across the world after the Foreigners’ Tribunal declared the President Medal winner soldier an illegal resident of India. Md. Kuran Ali, Md. Suwahan Ali and Ajmal Ali from Koloikash village, where Sanuallah lived, have filed an FIR against Das stating that the latter forged their statements and signatures to implicate the ex-soldier of the Indian Army.…
