India citizenship law: 100,0000 attend Hyderabad protest

More than 100,000 protesters have taken part in a peaceful march in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, chanting slogans against Narendra Modi’s new citizenship law. The protest, labelled the Million March, was organised by an umbrella group of Muslim and civil society organisations… Demonstrators were still entering the protest site late on Saturday afternoon, according to a Reuters witness, despite police saying no march would be allowed and that permission had only been granted for a 1,000-person gathering. The Indian government has faced weeks of acrimonious and, at times, violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed by Modi’s government in December.…

JNU violence: Delhi Police watch as ambulances smashed, leaders heckled

A little before 8 pm on Sunday, police gathered outside JNU’s north gate, having been called in following the violence unleashed by masked men on campus that lasted close to three hours. What followed was dozens of men, their faces covered with mufflers, chanting slogans – “Desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maaro saalo ko”, “Naxalwad murdabad” and “Na Maowad, Na Naxalwan, Sabse Upar Rashtrawad” – not allowing ambulances to reach the campus by puncturing tyres and smashing windows. They did so next to a police barricade and in front of a police detention van, with many of the men chanting slogans of ‘police zindabad’.…

Two from fringe Hindu outfits among 6 held for killing Bihar teen in CAA protest: Police

Two men affiliated to fringe Hindu outfits red-flagged by police are among six arrested in Patna for the murder of a teenager whose body was found on December 31 – 10 days after he was last seen participating in an RJD protest against the CAA and NRC with a Tricolour in his hand. Police said that Nagesh Samrat (23) of the Hindu Putra Sangathan and Vikas Kumar (21) of the Hindu Samaj Sangathan have been charged in the murder of Amir Hanzla (18), a worker at a bag stitching unit, in the Phulwari Sharif area.… Police have confirmed that Hindu Putra Sangathan is among 19 organisations about which the Bihar Police Special Branch had sought to obtain details of offices and office-bearers in an official communication last May.…
