Indian Americans Protest Surge in Attacks on Minorities

The Indian American Muslim Council and other coalition partner organizations held protests across various US cities to express outrage over the recent surge in attacks against minorities.

In last few weeks, IAMC chapters organized protest demonstrations in New York, San Jose, Dallas, Seattle, Chicago and Boston to condemn the tactical support given by the leaders of ruling party that is emboldening such forces.

The last few years have seen brutal killings of mostly Muslims and Dalits in the name of cow protection. In last few months, many minority community members were beaten across the country and forced to chant Jai Shri Ram by Hindutva fanatics.

Since 2010, 97% of beef related violence has taken place after the BJP-led Hindu nationalist government came to power. Since 2015, an increasing number of Muslims have been lynched, hanged or brutalized in the cruelest manner on mere suspicion of possessing or cooking beef.

Last month, Tabrez Ansari, 24, was beaten to death by a Hindu mob in Kharsawan district in Jharkhand on suspicion of theft, causing a public uproar.

Holding “Stop India from Fascism” and “Stop Lynching” placards, hundreds of protestors from all walks of life and religious backgrounds demanded an immediate end to atrocities against Muslims and other marginalized groups in India.
