Indian American Muslims Celebrate Independence Day, mark IAMC’s 10th anniversary

Wednesday August 15, 2012

Indian American Muslim Council (https://www.iamc.com) an advocacy group dedicated to safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos congratulates the Indian community at large on India’s 66th Independence Day, while also marking its own 10th anniversary.

We have indeed come a long way since August 15, 1947, with our collective development on several fronts having earned us a place among the premier nations of the world. We urge our compatriots to continue the noble task of nation-building, while ensuring that our economic progress and industrial advancement are guided by a renewed commitment to our timeless values of tolerance, compassion and working for the common good.

IAMC commemorates the sacrifice of the countless freedom fighters that came together across the nation for the cause of India’s independence. “At a time when the nation is beset with multiple challenges, including threats to its secular foundations, it is the determination to succeed and the spirit of national unity demonstrated by our founding fathers that is the need of the hour,” said Shaheen Khateeb, President of IAMC. “While upholding the rule of law, the nation needs to take decisive action against illegal detentions and the killing of innocent people in fake encounters. For millions living in poverty, including half a million people displaced by ethnic violence in Assam, the promise of independent India can only be fulfilled when there is justice and growth that is sustainable and inclusive,” added Mr. Khateeb.

IAMC is also celebrating this day as the 10th anniversary of the founding of the organization. “Since August 15, 2002 when IAMC was established, the organization has consistently stood up for the rights of all Indians, regardless of their faith,” said Zafar Haq, IAMC’s General Secretary since 2011. “Today marks 10 years in our struggle for the cause symbolized by the three words in our logo, ‘Peace, Pluralism and Justice,'” added Mr. Haq.

Indian American Muslim Council is the largest advocacy organization of Indian Muslims in the United States with 13 chapters across the nation.
