Gujarat Police Accused of Filing FIR against Victims after Muslims’ Homes Burnt Down in Khambat

On 24 February, a group of people pelted stones and burnt down the homes of Muslims living in Khambat’s Akbarpura area. The incident charged the area with communal animosity. Acting on the incident, the police filed an FIR against 52 people of which 35 are Muslims.

“People who lost their homes and were victims of violence have been named in the FIR. This phenomenon is not new. Following riots in Vadavali, Patan in 2017, cases were filed against Muslims,” Advocate Shamsad Pathan, Who is also the convener of Alpsankhyak Adhikar Manch, was quoted by the News Click as saying. “Interestingly, role of an outfit named Sriram Sena formed about three years ago in Khambat is being played down,” he said.

Informing about the cases registered against the people, Govind Patil, investigator officer, said “A total of 52 persons have been identified in the FIR, and 800 to 900 people have been booked. Of the 52 identified, 27 have been arrested, while the rest are absconding. Combing operations are underway, and more arrests will be done soon”.…
