Excerpts from the ATS chargesheet in Malegaon case

With this issue, we start to serialise selections from the chargesheet filed by the ATS Maharashtra in the Malegaon Blast Case of 2008. Here is a translation from Marathi of evidence no. 79: – Aug, 2007 (the name of witness is omitted in the original): Swami (Sudhakar Dwivedi alias Amritanand Devteerth) asked me to attend a meeting at Bhosla Military School. …. Col Purohit said: Abhinav Bharat, in order to avenge would resort to bomb blasts in Muslim localities. For this huge funds were to be collected…. On 11 April 2008, I reached Bhopal. A general meeting was attended by Swamiji, Dr RP Sinh, Pragya Singh Thakur, Col. Purohit, Major Upadhyaya, Bharat, Sameer Kulkarni, Himani Savarkar etc. There was discussion on establishing a branch of Abhinav Bharat in Madhya Pradesh … On the first floor of Ram Mandir, in a closed room the evening meeting was attended by these people…. I was assigned the task of serving tea and refreshments….

The meeting lasted an hour and a half…. [in this meeting] Col. Purohit said that Muslims should be targeted earliest so as to seek revenge. As they are in great number in Malegaon, hence a bomb explosion at that place would be the best kind of revenge. It was approved by everyone. Pragya Sinh said, “bomb blast would require manpower which I would arrange.” There should be no worry about that …. This gave me an inkling that they were hatching the conspiracy of a bomb blast at Malegaon …. I decided to maintain distance from them. On Swamiji’s visit in May-June 2008, Sidharth Kaul made arrangements for his stay at SOS head office, Sector 29, Faridabad. He stayed there for 3-4 days…. Swamiji instigated me again to seek revenge for atrocities perpetrated on the Hindus.

Witness No. 118 [translated from Marathi]: …. a few years ago, Samir Kulkarni and his friends had founded an organisation called Abhinav Bharat … On the first floor of the temple, a meeting was held in a closed room attended by Swami Shankaracharya, Col. Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Major Upadhyaya, Samir Kulkarni and a few others. In this meeting Col. Purohit said that Malegaon had a substantial Muslim population, hence atrocities on Hindus must be avenged at the earliest at that place (something of this kind). Sadhvi Pragya commented that she had manpower [for executing the operation]. There should be no worry. Two or three months after the Bhopal meeting, i.e., June-July 2008, a meeting was held at Jabalpur in a dharmashala…. There were approximately 300 persons (including) Sadhvi Pragya Sinh, Shankaracharya, a local Sadhvi (who was addressed as didi), Samir Kulkarni and Major Upadhyaya from Pune.
